Notting Hill is the Ladbroke estate: crescents of paired stucco villas laid out in the 1840s around private communal gardens, with painted terraces sloping down towards Portobello Road and the red-brick mansion blocks of Pembridge Square. It is one of the largest and most recognisable Victorian suburbs in London, and it is protected accordingly.
